The Elephant Man

The Elephant Man is based on the true story of Joseph Carey Merrick, a 19th Century London man who suffered from Proteus syndrome. His body was extremely deformed, including severe overgrowth of bone and soft tissue on his skull, arm and leg.

Because of his physical appearance, Merrick was unable to find acceptance in mainstream society, but for a while was able to make a living by displaying himself as a freak in carnival sideshows. Toward the end of the 19th Century the public began to question the decency of freak shows, and in 1886 the United Kingdom outlawed them entirely.

Locations and themes co-exist in this Victorian grunge design; ever present is a ghostly scenic painted circus floor surrounded by real straw and freak show posters on the walls, while natural white curtains are drawn to offer intimacy in the hospital scenes.
